OK when tinkering around with the cloth sims in MD I get this effect a lot where the cloth goes out of sync with the avatar even though the FPS is correct. Sometimes it syncs sometimes it don't… I know that this is not C4D really but has anyone got any ideas?

@Capruzzese LOL! The render is definitely noisy since it is only a low res render with all the settings on low - thanks for the nice comments though 🙂 What I am trying to achieve is better hair and cloth simulations as well as the look of it using Redshift. I have started adding some more plants using Forester and am trying to get the cloth using Marvelous Designer to look as good as possible. The hair is also a bit shiny to me but I am working on it…

FERNS! That's what I need ferns! When I go cycling in my local wood there are ferns everywhere… and brambles - bloody things! Cut myself to pieces on them 🙂

OK here is the latest version with improved boots (no cloth showing through) and clothing although there are a still a few little glitches. I am doing a Marvelous Designer course so hoping to find a way of improving the cloth, it doesn't help that these characters are jumping about a lot! Have also looked at improving the hair render quality but even though I am using Redshift nodes it still seems a bit like they have tons of hairspray on their hair… Looking forwards to any comments or tips 🙂 Robin & John

Well I have been working on this mostly the textures on the boots - took ages UVing them! Here is a quick grab showing boot improvements 🙂 Next up is looking at getting the hair to work better in Redshift…

Hi Peeps Here is another animation that I started on a few years ago for Bomper Studio but never finished. Originally it wasn't going to have cloth sims in it or hair but it switched over to that and I had to learn a bit about hair and Marvelous Designer 🙂 Anyway I wanted to polish this up and get the cloth and hair looking better along with rendering it all in Redshift. There are some obvious faults that I am working on like cloth peaking through in places and the hair being a bit glittery but any comments and tips would be most welcome 🙂 Robin & John

Hi Igor Well if I get time I might give it a go but I have just forked out for an R23 subs, HelloLux tuts, Redshift renewal and XP particles maintenance and I have my eye on Forester so if I did adopt it I am not sure I could afford it right now… 🙂

Hi Peeps Been working on this again trying to improve the sound, lighting and camera moves and other bits… Looking forwards to seeing what you lot think? Graveyard Revisited I removed the mist since it killed the shadows and I think the DOF kinda gives a distant mist effect.
-
OK peeps suggestions taken on board. I have tinkered with the lights and as Dave said the main area light in the scene is too large so I have switched it to an infinite light which brings back the shadows and I have also removed the mist since the DOF is burring the background which kind of has the same effect. So here are two images with this executed from the church scene and the tomb scene. I have also added wind to the trees but I find it increases the number of leaves on the trees when I do this... Something to rectify in Forester. I am liking this result better :-)

@Dave thanks for your comments although I don't think I will be giving the skelly red eyes… And I don't want to do this using a toon shader, I know that is classic cartoon but I want this in 3D and to help me get better with Redshift 🙂 Not sure what you mean about keeping the funny walk until the very end? I think you mean keep skelly walking and don't pull back from the tomb at the start of shot 03 (where skelly sees tomb) which makes sense. Everyone keeps saying add shadows they are there but they just don't seem to be strong enough. I cannot seem to increase the blackness of the shadows from the main light and the fog/mist seems to be dissipating them and I don't want to remove the fog. I am doing a course in Redshift at the moment so I am hoping to find a way to darken/deepen the shadows.

Cerbera I agree completely on the sound I just threw it together and it is ‘rough’. I was only thinking this yesterday when reviewing the whole flick but posted anyway.
-
Igor thanks for taking a look again. I am not after too realistic a result since this is meant to be a cartoon. I have started a more in depth course on Redshift so the lights might improve and some of the textures. I think skelly’s texture needs a bit of work, perhaps the ground. Bare in mind that I am not using GI - yet 😀

Well spent a bit more time on this working on the DOF, lights and camera moves - think it's an improvement 🙂 Graveyard Revisited

The skeleton was the easy part it’s all the lighting and camera work that’s the hardest. Think I might do one of those HelloLux Redshift training courses see if I can learn a thing or two to help improve this flick 😀

Hi Peeps This is a project I started back in 2000 when I first started learning C4D. I came back to it now and again over the years as my skills improved and recently I decided it would be great to revisit it once again using it as my first Redshift project (I have since used Redshift on other projects). It's obviously still not finished but I want to see peoples thought on areas they think could improve it. So far other people are saying it's too long and I should fiddle about with the cameras and shadows since the lighting doesn't look realistic - it's a cartoon! Graveyard Revisited

Hi Igor Well Pixel Plow looks a lot cheaper than Rebus so I shall give them a try and report back. They don't look as stream-lined as Rebus but he-ho when you have 40 animation to render…
-
Hi Igor No issue other that people keep saying to me that Rebus is the most expensive out there. Not tried Pixel Plow yet but I am going to give it a go. I was looking at investing in another GPU based render machine but that would cost me £2k+. If I can find a reasonable render farm then I could put the money towards a new pair of GPUs for my existing computer which would be nice 🙂
-
Please forgive if this has been answered elsewhere (I did search the forums honest) but apart from Rebus and Pixel Plow can anyone recommend any render farms that support Redshift?

LOL! Yes I guess I did think this way back in 2009 when I actually worked on a character animation project - could I do this all day, all week, all month, all year around and I thought - no! So I guess that I am like you everfresh I like the diversity and should ignore people who say specialise unless I want to do just one thing constantly which as you say might mean taking a full time job anyway. Mind you I don't think I could ever take on a full time job again. I worked for several companies on a permanent basis and found that they were all rather dire… Had much more fun being a freelance operative 🙂

Hi Everyone - Happy new year and decade! I want to pose this question/conundrum to everyone here to hear there thoughts since it keeps being thrown at me time and time again: should you be a specialist or a generalist? I have now been working as a freelance artist for the past 10 years and whilst I originally started out wanting to be a character animator (having studied at Animation Mentor) I have worked as a modeller, rigger, motion graphics artist, compositor, 2D animator and various others roles on projects ranging from film, TV shows, advertising, corporate presentation, music videos, fly-throughs, product visualisation and various other things. This has all been great but as I said I still get people saying you have too much diversity of work on your website and you should specialise. Well I tried this ten years ago doing just character animation and found that one minute I would be working and then doing nothing so I started accepting other types of work and this is how I have progressed. I think it's a similar thing in nature where you get creatures that specialise and then when their speciality no longer works they become extinct. Whereas those that can adapt seem to survive. I think the speciaility scenario is only valid for the big film studios who only hire character animators or compositors who do only that whereas the smaller studios tend to have people who are more generalist. Anyway I would love to hear people's thoughts/experiences on this conundrum. For now I just say I am a 3D artist with character animation skills.

Got it! Thanks EAlexander :-+ It's not the place I would have looked under Lighting and Rendering 8-P

Forgive me if I have missed somewhere on the forum where this exist already but I cannot seem to find a WIP/Finished Work section like there used to be to show off one's latest pieces... Does such a section exist?

I'll have to send that diagram to a few of my clients - I would love to see their reactions 🙂

Has this role been filled? I worked on some music videos a few years ago and we went to Pinewood Studios to get the MoCap created. Trouble was the studio only used Maya rigged characters and we where all C4D based. Wasn't too much of a problem though since we exported everything through Motion Builder and into C4D as FBX. Although now I would use Alembic as Iline suggested. I know that you can import from MoCap data directly into C4D too - wish I and know how to do that back then! @Iline I would always talk to Bret Bays - he wrote the Character object system for MAXON and he himself is excellent, and his scripts for weight painting are essential. Don't think it was Bret that wrote the Character Object System although he used it extensively in the short film 'The Ottoman'. Think it was a guy from Australia back in 2012/13 who worked for MAXON - that's what Brian Horgan told me 🙂

I have an X-Particles 3.5 license and they are doing an offer today for half price upgrade. But I was also looking at Houdini and that seems more powerful :-) So I am in a dither whether to upgrade my X-Particles or go down the Houdini route and have very little time to decide. So I thought I would ask here what seasoned users would go for?
