That is it exactly, I probably wasn't very clear. Sorry about that. I spent a few hours yesterday just putting a pre-rigged model on a plane and trying to pose it. The way you do things is radically different. You need to be in "pose" mode to even access moving the joints for example. Starting all over from zero after so a few decades is not easy!

There are some rumours that blender might eventually have an ipad version which would push me completely into doing my best to learn it. You can't be in tour comfort zone all the time. Before c4d i used something called turbo silver on Amiga and then used lightwave for awhile on amiga and an early Mac. I tried some very basic 3d programs that came out in the late 90s as well. Once I understood the c4d basics i just went with it, it was easier to understand and less money to keep. I think if blender had an easier interface sooner i would have switched sooner or at least used both for their strong points. I almost did my last short film in blender snd now i wish i had, i would have been ready when v19 stopped working!

I used to try for small Canadian festivals, this was before the internet was a real thing and we sent in dvds. I still think going local to start is a good idea. I live a budget that is shockingly small, so i search film freeway for discounts and festivals i can afford. I highly recommend that site. My horror films started getting shown when a festival saw my first online and asked me to show it , i was really surprised and they have shown almost all my horror shorts since. There are so many to choose from and I don’t kid myself any will get me anywhere but the validation is nice for my ego and my CV.

I am sure Mike was referring To the ease of learning it. I am pretty slow to learn some things and nodes completely eludes me. Sadly(for me) Blender is also becoming all modes all the time!

The film was selected to for the New York Istanbul short film festival. I only applied for one more festival in the spring so maybe it will be four for four.

I can’t stop working with everything else i use because of one software i cant afford to update. I do not use my computer exclusively for C4d. I could keep c4d 19 because I am a one man band with my animation. I do not make a living from it anymore and i still have to eat and pay bills. I love making my animation projects and doing that is more important than using a specific software i happen to like alot. I just have to learn blender sooner than i anticipated.

Since we can post about experiences with other software and i always get great advice here i hope to keep posting. If i Winn the lottery I will update to Cinema… whatever number it is up to!

The community is one big reason i stayed with c4d and also one reason i started trying to move to blender. If i can have a breakthrough moment in Blender i might get used to using it!

I think price is going to be the deciding factor in the end. My last animation had a budget of 0$CAD. I have an online Blender course I started (it was on sale for 4$!) and it's pretty comprehensive but Blender has been changing really quickly lately. At least it seems to be getting more user friendly. There are also adding I really would have liked for C4D around lately like some water stuff that doesn't require long simulations. I don't usually need anything hyper realistic, just "real enough". Houdini looks amazing and the things you can do are certainly high end quality. I dabble with 2D and 3D and Blender has a great solution for both. Procreate Dreams is coming soon for 2D animation and I am really looking forward to using that. I will say it sad to be seriously leaving c4d after so long. I can't even remember what I started with/// it as un V8 I think.

A ton. Cactus Dan's rigging tools. X particles. Turbulence FD, a ton of the Nitro 4d plugins. Over 90 I've collected over the years. I have never understood the whole node thing, even expresso is mostly a mystery to me. I am not a tech guy but much more an artist and Cinema really was the best interface for me to get things done. Every time I open Blender It is like I have never seen it before.

I was thinking of houdini, I should check it out. Maybe it is something to save money for and buy. blender is free but i just cant get my head around it and being On c4d for decades has frozen my brain. i was happy enough with v19 and all my plugins and knew it would end at some point but i am just not ready! I still have it in my ancient laptop in case of emergency.

I just updated to Mac OS Somona, I had read V19 was compatible but it seems it isn't really. My icons in cinema are a mess but the pull down menus work. It's a bit confusing. I was hoping get a little more time from cinema... I guess I had BETTER learn Blende now as I about to start a new horror animation.

Semi finalist in The Bloody Horror International Film Festival!

Sorry to take so long to respond, I have been busty with work and not checking into core 4d. Thanks for your kind words. I come from a film, that is pre digital background, for photography and cinematography, plus most of my art is pen and ink. Oddly this was my first black and white animation! I used a muted tone and style I like, at the moment, in my photography. I didn’t want an expressionist or film noir look for this. I certainly see me going that route in future as I LOVE those styles! I have never seen that short! It looks very advanced for that time! As for the tombstone names, a couple are fictitious and reference my original short story but the vast majority are dead friends and family mostly from the last decade. There are four sides to that monument and I ran out of space when I went further back in time so I just showed some more recent or meaningful names to me in the shot. The newspaper articles are friends and family as well. Including me. One friend was very excited he was amoung “the lost”!

Didn’t win a prize but being a finalist was nice. I have several other festival possibilities in October and another next spring. I hope to get into one!

Thank you for the feedback!

Ok It seems done. DAST, I think you will be happier with the walking towards the monument clip. 🙂 If anyone is interested in some more information I have a blog post about this project. Eventually I will add English and French subtitles but I don't have the energy for that at the moment. Thanks to everyone who has been following and encouraging me here.

Thanks for paying attention and the feedback. I recently recorded with the voice actor and have been working on the final edit but there is still time to refine that movement a little. I am still not getting Blender - see above - I should force myself to just make the next project in it and get over my fears and issues with it. C4D V19 is not going to work forever and I can't afford to upgrade!
-
Still on V19 of C4D... this would have been good Blender challenge but I'm still not "getting" blender yet. I think I can get past the modelling and rigging but the whole node thing throws me off. I REALLY love C4D's tag system and old texture system but it could just be decades of habit I need to break!

An extended shot of walking towards the memorial of the lost in the town bone yard.

So I will post something soon, I am actually making tons of progress and a working with the voice actor this week for the narration and tweaking some stuff already animated. I am a little unsure if I can show the whole film here. It’s not bloody at all but it does involve suicide which might be against the rules.
-
https://youtu.be/5O8_NI11IjE I have been unable to get too much done, I have yet to get the narration recorded for this but I finally made some progress this week. I hope it continues!

Thanks! My biggest issue which is now part of the new (to me) C4D is nodes. I have enough trouble with expresso! I see those windows with tons of nodes connected to do something I could set up without thinking in the texture window and my brain shuts off. I think staying with C4D after not being able to do anything is the les frustrating way to get something done right now. I really should just plan something in Blender next though. My V19 won't keep working forever!

Hi Igor! Still using V19 and the standard Render engine. I did get to play a little, very little, with the latest version of C4D and while it would take me a little tie to get used ti it, the updated interface seems fantastic and fast. There were tons of trees I didn't feel like I could use images on planes with while going through the forest. so that was a lot of ambient occlusion and polygons to render. This is sort of project to help me put some meaning into the last terrible 2 years I have had with sadly more to come. I still want to learn Blender and do a short intuit from start to finish, but my head is so mired in C4D it's been hard to learn anything so different. I hope to finish this before the end of summer.
