I did try and import them as polygon object, and while that does seem to fix the weird glitch it has a couple of limitations, biggest one for me is not being able to use the attributes I exported from Houdini (pscale, Cd) to influence the look of the particles. Would love to know if there is a way to use these with polygon object, if not guess I'll have to just use this way, but it's still a bit weird that TP does that.
