    Outside Amatka

    From the album: ILLUSTRATIONS

Here’s an image I did recently for a magazine. It’s for an interview with New Weird author Karin Tidbeck - one of Sweden’s best speculative writers, straddling sci-fi, fantasy and horror. The image depicts a scene from the sci-fi novel “Amatka” (highly recommended!). I did a rough render in Corona with fog, pushing it in post towards a more cinematic and illustrative mood.

  4. Looks very impressive. I just wish I had chosen a career with less demands on hardware. Writing, perhaps?
  5. Cosmos models are coming to C4d as well. They’re in Corona 8, but still in beta.
  6. Newtek used to be really quick to implement some cool new research in Lightwave. But that was 15 years ago.
  7. I have no coding skills, but I would love to see functionality like this.
  8. I know, I know : ) It’s not about the money. It’s just that my head is not always working properly. I really like the simplicity of giving someone my money and get an object/file in return. Patreon and Kickstarter are fantastic. But I prefer the old fashioned way of exchanging money for goods.
  9. That would be perfect! (Unless it’s too much work, of course). Patreon feels like a bigger commitment.
  10. Thanks, just what I need for my current book project! I will give it a try. Apart from search, I’m still missing a way to select a poly to find out what material it belongs to. It was a big time saver with big models in Lightwave.
  11. I’m sure there are lots of new stuff I don’t know about, but the cheapest Apogee interfaces used to be a good way to get pro quality. But taming sound reflections in a home recording space is usually the biggest hurdle to overcome. Good mics and interfaces will not help if the acoustics are not controlled. For DAWs, it’s a matter of taste these days. All of them are really capable. Ableton Live is quick to learn and has a very creative community. Logic is common in home studios. Avid Pro Tools dominates in pro studios. Here’s a good roundup: https://www.musicradar.com/news/the-best-daws-the-best-music-production-software-for-pc-and-mac
  12. I’m also guilty of returning to my VSTs during the pandemic. But I only had a hiatus of five years or so, but I still remember the feeling I got after a much longer break. Going from a Korg M1 to Abelton Live was quite shocking. So many synths, so many effects, so many layers! The first year I felt like a kid in a candy store. Today, I get the same feeling when I try Melodyne to clean up my crappy guitar samples. It’s like magic.
  13. Lovely work! I tested a similar package of separate HDR studio lights a few weeks ago and got some really nice results. It’s funny how the digital world circles back to the analog. It reminds me of the tape emulation plugins used on lots of music these days. There’s something about those barely audible changes (or visible, in the above renders) that are very pleasing to the human senses.
  14. Welcome! The retro Casio commercial is awesome : )
  15. Rising Waters Here's an illustration for an upcoming tabletop RPG book. This image started with the idea of a cage suspended from an ornate wrought-iron pole, with some malicious creature left to rot or drown (or both) in a dark space. Everything grew out of that idea. Balancing the daylight from above with the red fog at the far end was the trickiest part. Maybe apart from getting the water right, combining refraction and algae murkiness.
  16. Did anyone try Omniverse yet? Is it as easy and flexible as they make it sound?
  17. I see what you mean. I usually work with less reflective objects (furniture) which might be easier to cheat with.
  18. Here's a bit of childhood nostalgia from the late 1970s.
  19. Good to see more Swedes here!
  20. Looking forward to it. I always assumed that product shots get heavily touched up in post. I would have been happy with the white BG renders above, then tweaking the car and the background separately in Photoshop.
