SKATE OR DIE

hmmm interesting times. The rate at which these A.I based technologies are improving is insane. just comparing the latest version of mid journey to previous iterations, it's getting harder and harder to differentiate. while modelling is obviously more complex than creating a 2d image if the trend continuous i see very usable end results in the not too distant future, while this could end up being a useful tool to quickly iterate rough ideas it is a little worry in the grand scheme of things for people like me who model for a living.

Legal question regarding NDA and a use of an animation in my portfolio
VECTOR replied to hyyde's topic in Discussions
This doesn’t surprise me at all. I think due to the large amount of models on that site stuff tends to slip through the net and / or is ignored. As someone who regularly gets the their work stolen you can’t blame the manufacturers from cracking down on it. -

I personally would keep it with the same branding. Very doubtful the client would have a problem with it, and if they did it’s likely they would contact you first to ask you to remove it. Licensing and copy rights are a tricky thing to navigate, and it depends how aggressively brands protect their IP’s. For example some years ago I made a Marvin the Martian 3d model, and Vozz from the forum here rigged it, and uploaded it to his website and made it available to download for FREE and was hit with a cease and desist and essentially ordered to remove it or face legal action. I very much doubt the average user uploading models to turbo squid has any sort of licensing, especially for vehicles etc this is something game companies for example would pay substantially for. I’m not sure how websites like this navigate that issue it may just be that they remove models on Dmca requests. using something like Bart in a personal project would likely fall under the fan art banner and be fine to use for non commercial projects. But if you’re using it to generate any sort of monetary gains especially then you’re opening yourself up for legal action, even giving a model away for free, like i highlighted above, that someone else could potentially monetise can be problematic. -

How’s it going man ? Based in the uk as well. Not a lawyer but as far as I’m aware and with every NDA agreement I’ve had, as soon as the project went live I was able to share images etc that I’ve worked on for said client, this includes companies such as American Express, Aixsponza, Amazon, even the project I’m working on right now for a bunch of small toys. Never been an issue. take a look at the terms of the NDA usually they’re pertaining to disclosing information of any kind about the project before it’s released to the public, unless it specifically states other wise e.g you’re expressly prohibited from sharing any images or videos etc relating to said project publicly ever, then I don’t see an issue. Although take this with a pinch of salt as I’m not qualified to give legal advice, you could try asking on one of the uk law sub reddits. Could just be that Client A doesn’t want Client B to know/find out that they subbed out some of the work for said project to someone else. Regarding your other question about using branded content for personal portfolios, again shouldn’t be an issue, as long as you aren’t monetising it, e.g selling digital prints or stills of a 3d Bart Simpson for example, or anything Nintendo. Stay away from Nintendo 😛 -
with the tongue there and the teeth it tends to be enough to get the inside of the mouth in shadow, as the main lightsource isn't hitting the mouth area strongly enough to illuminate the inside of it, it does become a bit of a problem the bigger the mouth though especially if it's open fairly wide. in some cases i'll use a flat black material with no reflection/specular applied to the inside or use a seperate light with a negative value just for the mouth cavity to add shadow to it instead of light. Conversely it can be just as much of a pain to get it nicely lit as it can be to get it nicely shadowd

Ha! that would be hilarious actually !

No model or blue prints to go from just eyeballing it , playing with the proportions as i go, been doing this so long now i can get them pretty close these days by eye, for the more detailed bits, i'll block the basic shape out first until i'm happy with the proportions then add the details after. I've got some reference images im using as a guide, but there aren't , or atleast i couldn't find any high res images of him in the mk 4 suit from the first game and any images of the game model are as you'd expect from a game that came out 20 years ago nearly, quite poor, there are images from the blackmesa remake but the suit is quite different and i wanted to keep it as close to the original as possible. i did manage to find some images for a female version of the suit, that someone posted on mod db from a few years back, that and some game art are the main images im working from. This is sort of a blend of the two along with some of my styling. pretty fun project, i've moved away from the more detailed models recently the last few years, apart from work related stuff. mainly down to the amount of time they take, so this is a nice change of pace to get back to a little bit of that.

Been playing through blackmesa recently and it brought back a bunch of nostalgia, so just had to make Freeman from half life 1, Haven't seen anyone doing fan art in his original suit so here we go, here's the progress so far, still playing with the size and proportions of stuff.

i use pixel plow and it's pretty reasonable. the deedee turntable i rendered out cost me about 12 pounds on the lowest priority setting, due to the sss materials and 4k resolution it was taking 10 minutes per frame with my 1070, farm had it done in under a few hours, times will depend on the gpu load though, if the load is low and you aren't in a hurry you can leave it on the cheapest options and have it done in a few hours. higher gpu load on the farm and you'll wait longer/have to pay more to get it in the same time but relatively speaking it's one of the more reasonably priced render farms.

Good to hear ! If it’s any consolation England got spanked by the frogs in the World Cup, not a massive football fan but as an Englishman that cut deep 😅 glad all is good your end !

Hmm well I’d argue that having to carry around an egpu enclosure and a graphics card as well as a mac book isn’t really an ideal situation when it comes to being portable. Also as you said already the newer macs don’t support egpus so you’d need to purchase an older mac book pro with an intel processor (2016 onwards) with thunderbolt 3 ports plus buy the enclosure and the card. Not saying it can’t be done but it’s just making it unnecessarily problematic/expensive when you could pick up a fairly decent windows laptop for 1000+ and be ready to go. I know people gripe about windows machines and apple os being more streamlined, faster etc but from a hardware perspective at least you have far more options with windows/intel/amd based machines. Apple doesn’t like to play with others.
