POSTPONED: Zoom meeting has been set up. Here's the information:
-
I have set up a zoom call for anyone interested in the Cinema 4D Basics Comprehensive Certification for the 15th of March, 12 noon Eastern Time. There were some questions and a few misconceptions I would like to talk about, and reply in real time to attendees. This is going to be a discussion, face to face (or voice to face) and a great opportunity to explain what the Certification is about and listen to comments and suggestions. The current information page is here: https://www.maxon.net/en/certification A short overview video here: and here's the meeting link: Athanasios Pozantzis is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting. Topic: C4D Certification Discussion Time: Mar 15, 2022 12:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) Join Zoom Meeting https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82161824605?pwd=YWFKMklhaXR5YW9OSWIzSFg4dU1wZz09 Meeting ID: 821 6182 4605 Passcode: 351659 One tap mobile +17789072071,,82161824605#,,,,*351659# Canada +12042727920,,82161824605#,,,,*351659# Canada Dial by your location +1 778 907 2071 Canada +1 204 272 7920 Canada +1 438 809 7799 Canada +1 587 328 1099 Canada +1 647 374 4685 Canada +1 647 558 0588 Canada +1 929 205 6099 US (New York) +1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma) +1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC) +1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago) +1 346 248 7799 US (Houston) +1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose) Meeting ID: 821 6182 4605 Passcode: 351659 Find your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/kes97YpcfK

This is by "design" and one of the things I will elaborate on. I can't promise it won't be inconvenient I'm afraid.

On another note, I would like to invite everyone to a mini summit to discuss everything certification related. I can arrange a zoom (or equivalent) session, live, where I can reply to any specific question, and meet everyone. There's much more nuance built-in the Certification system and it's an evolving situation. It would be great if you also spread the word to get as many interested parties as possible to jump on the call. If anything else, we just hang out for a couple of hours and I can give you some nice Greek recipes... Please let me know what you think.

Although I did not set the suggested price, let me give an overview of what's involved in a user certification: 1. You have to prepare a 4 hour test, by creating questions and scene files. 2. The test is 4 hours long, and you take notes for every question 3. After the test, you have to go through these notes, maybe rewatch the recording, and make a detailed report on which topics the user failed. 4. Write them an email detailing the above and suggested sources of further education. All the tests I have conducted require roughly 2 days work. If you think my time is not worth $65/hour then maybe I do have an inflated sense of my own self worth... I'm not saying I don't BTW 🙂

On this point, a lot of the Basics Certification test questions are "open book". You will open an initial file and the final file and you can look at the solution to recreate it in the initial. It may sound like "cheating" but in all honesty, if you don't know the specific topic, you won't be able to solve it even if you do look at the solution. It's not about memorizing anything, but about knowing the fundamentals... plus there's a time limit to each question so copying parameters is not an option 🙂

This couldn't be further from the truth. The User certification is a project conceived by me and Paul Babb, quite a few years ago, and its goal is to do exactly the opposite of what you're implying. I have explained it in some of my presentations, but have no issue posting here for clarity. DISCLAIMER: Although I work with Maxon, this post should NOT be considered an official Maxon reply. This is MY PERSONAL TAKE on the matter. HISTORY: Many years ago, Paul and I realized there's a huge gap in the 3D industry's hiring process. On the one side we had recently graduated students (with large student debts) that couldn't get a job, and on the other side, we had studios that couldn't find talent. @Marcio G. summarizes it well in his above post. His observations and process are very similar to what we observed. With Paul's blessings, I started discussing this issue with studio owners, creative directors and other fellow trainers, in order to understand where the problem stems from, and to see if there's something we could do to, either fix it, or close that gap. What we realized right at the start, was that we couldn't do anything about the artistic part of the hiring process. We have no business evaluating an artist's work. What remained was the technical part. The question became: "What is the minimum knowledge a Cinema 4D artist needs to have, to be productive in a studio environment?". Because of the many different disciplines that exist in our industry, we decided to focus on the generalist workflow, so that we can establish a process and in the future expand it to more specialized disciplines. This is how the "Topics List" was created. The list will always evolve, and I am open to suggestions about making it better. Something very important to consider is that the List also serves as a learning guide for Cinema 4D users, and we're slowly adding more tutorials to the topics. We're open to comments and critique, and anything that will make it better... THE MONIEZ: The suggested Price is just that. A SUGGESTED price. If a Certified Trainer wants to provide tests for free, they can do that. Maxon has nothing to do with that. I would please ask NOT to make assumptions about the intent or scope of the Certification and please watch this brief presentation, and ask specific questions here. I am thinking of doing some sort of live zoom call to address anything you ask me. I'm also preparing some more detailed replies to some questions posted above.

Hello everyone. I feel there's a bit of a misunderstanding about the Elementary knowledge [online] test. First and foremost, you're supposed to take the Elementary test with C4D open. Using software requires you have it open, and so does testing 🙂 The Elementary knowledge test is NOT in any way related to the Basics Comprehensive Certification Test. It's just a self test to see what you know about C4D and incentivize you to investigate some things if you get them wrong. If you have further questions, please let me know here...

a Modulo Modifier should do it. If it doesn't work, please let me know:

He is a great guy indeed... and you're not bad yourself brother! Very much appreciated! -
Reply to all: There's no "generalized" solution unless there's a definitive "pattern" to what you're trying to make. Making a randomizer or "counter" to iterate objects that exist in predefined positions/rotations is doable using MoGraph, Python e.t.c., but a very specific set of rules needs to be defined. Since these are commercial projects, I would advise finding a Technical Artist, or Developer to work with and create your own custom solution. If you need some references/introductions, I can provide some. For simplified solutions (like the "Counter" I mentioned), they may become a subject for one of my tutorials in the near future.
-
I have a suspicion you don't want to "randomize", but to get all possible unique combinations of those parts. That is more akin to a "counter" rather than a "randomization"... This could be done using MoGraph and some mathematically placed keyframes. Are you making some sort of NFT series? It seems to be quite popular these days...

My very loyal but invisible Developer made me a Plugin for Christmas. It's the "Phong to Spline" and uses the Phong Tag values or Isoparms to generate a Procedural Spline. Watch the tutorial and Download the plugin from the provided link:

YES! Your example shows one of the huge advantages of this method. I was thinking of doing a follow-up video, showing this alternative technique... I will be very happy to credit you if you wish... let me know if there's any specific information you'd like me to mention. Name, website, twitter and so on...

and the E2S is 3 times faster 🙂 (I see you're cloning splines after all)
-
For your setup, Yes, but what if you want to displace the spline and then make the tubes?

Hey everyone, check out my Youtube channel where I have the download link for a Free "Edge to Spline" plugin. It's Open source, procedural, do-whatever-you-want with it. The code is open, so use it for educational purposes as well. Modify it, and make more super plugins. Please don't sell it. [Disclaimer. I have no responsibility, expressed or implied as far as the plugin is concerned. Use it as-is. Whatever happens, it's your fault. By downloading it, you agree to this... and owe me a grilled steak... medium rare please] Share, Like, Subscribe. edgeToSpline.zip

missed the first reply... sorry 🙂

select the spline and in the Attributes set the intermediate points to Uniform:
