  1. Wow - Gazza, you got there just before I did - I first heard of it and got the demo of R6 🙂 But yeah, I felt kinda old myself posting this 🙂 CBR
  2. Yeah I agree with Igor - the internet and forums / communities like this one have all but replaced industry magazines. I stopped buying Computer Arts about 10 years ago, which was my favourite of the bunch, but I don't even know if they are still going... in the latter years it made very little sense to be paying that much for what was rapidly turning into 2 articles and 500 adverts ! CBR
  3. 30 years to the day that Cinema was first released by the original team when Christian and Philip Losch entered their new mega speedy ray-tracer into Kickstart magazine's monthly programming contest, and won the competition... that was to go on to be released on Amiga as FastRay, and went on to become Cinema 4D R1 2 years later. A lot has changed since then, but not how much I like it ! 🙂 Well done the original team, the current team, and all those in between who worked, and still work to make this software great. 🎉🎈🎂 CBR
  4. Yes it's the sort of quality modelling that feels like a nice warm hug on a cold winter night. More like that please
  5. Yes, but betas don't get their updates the same way so not sure if it is available in regular in-app updates panel yet... CBR
  6. I have been using 23.0xx in a production workflow, and had a few issues along the way, but nothing too drastic, and all in all it has held up and no deadlines have been missed ! 🙂 But of course all these fixes are most welcome... CBR
  7. A highly enjoyable short by Auralnauts... Came for the 3D, stayed for the comedy 🙂 CBR

    Gear Thing

...and may I say 'very neatly solved !' Gears doing clever things are always very rewarding. More like that please, everyone ! CBR
  9. I wouldn't worry. As long as we can all keep things civilised and not descend into any sort of flame tunnel this is as good a place as any to discuss such things. Personally I ticked the 'Don't care' option. And I don't, as long as what we have works, which the new system seems to do consistently for me. But I never have to move my license between machines, so the question's not really aimed at me anyway 🙂 CBR
  10. There's no problem with the Poll - it is posing a perfectly salient (if slightly contentious) question, and canvassing opinion. But because it is linked to the subscriptions issue, which has been discussed to death here in numerous other threads, you might expect to see some 'post fatigue' from people who have been here a while and seen all this discussed endlessly before... 11. Hi Tom, and welcome back 🙂 You don't need to upload any specific files (though an avatar would be nice !), and your sidebar tells me you have completed your profile as far as all the info we need to be able to help with questions. I don't think that Company name is required, so if you have left that blank and it tells you your profile is incomplete we should report that to Admin... CBR
  12. Modelling there looks at least as correct as it needs to be 🙂 Only thing I can see that may be wrong is the phong angle on the flat ad board behind the guy... CBR
  13. I think we all do a bit - me included, but we had to retire that sort of thing due to general lack of participation - just not enough people had the time to devote to the longer challenges latterly... CBR
  14. Stumbled across something properly amazing today, by MelodySheep. More so because I think it's just one guy, and a seriously powerful GPU or 20... Looks like Cinema to me, and possibly Octane (?), but whatever he did it in, this is a breath-taking 38 minutes of CG excellence and Grade A soundtracking. I imagine Netflix will be giving this guy his own show soon. Enjoy ! CBR
  15. Indeed the grass isn't always greener on the dark side of the hill... I came from Max, and loved it whilst I was there. Its tools forged my passion for modelling, and its stack was my best friend for a long time, something I still occasionally miss in Cinema to this day. But as DF points out, often we can do stack stuff another way, and I would find it very upsetting to have to go back to it now that I have been shown the way a UI should work in Cinema. At one point I really liked the UI, and really 'got' the Max way of doing things, but looking at it now I have to agree with all of the above, and put next to Cinema there is simply no contest. Max's 'Object Manager' is not really worthy of the name in the C4D sense, but its function has never been intended to be anything other than a way to select stuff for editing. But in modelling, it is a giant. It contains literally every single tool I feel I am missing from Cinema, and even though some of those tools are buggy as hell, and always have been, it is nice to wield that sort of modelling power. Symmetry is an absolute joy to work with in Max. So are proper edge and face constraints, smoothing groups, and crease sets. But shortly after that I run out of reason to love it pretty damn fast. Certainly zero love remaining for the way stuff looks in the viewport with Max. The working environment and appearance of models is leagues superior now in C4D. In fact I would say only Modo comes a close second, but all the other big names have UIs I actively dislike, and it would upset me to have to be in any of them every day. Max might remain king of modelling for now, but it's an old old dragon, and one whose crown is slipping further every day... When even die-hard max modelling leviathans like YouTube's Arrimus 3D start producing blender vids you gotta wonder if their day in the sun and their prime position as Industry Standard in the few areas it still holds that distinction, are drawing to an end... CBR
  16. Give that man a doh-nut for another A* modelling job; not one polygon too few or many 🙂 CBR
  17. Yes I too thought that, hence asking for a picture, in case it was a ridiculously simple monorail !! Because if it's a 'standard' type one, then I would have to remind OP of 'the triangle' ! CBR
  18. Got a picture of that to share ? CBR
  19. I love it how internet is so much higher than toilet paper (apart from that short bit where we all went mental and thought it was going to run out). Mask line just brilliant 😄 CBR
  20. On the plus side, nobody had to model anything - just nick the mask off your stock 'surgeon' character ! CBR

    Hey everybody

Welcome to the Cafe 🙂 May your learnings here be long and happy... Please do complete your profile asap - we need that done to be able to help if you have questions. CBR
  22. Yes - I would be absolutely lost without mine. One of the best buys I ever made 3D-wise... navigation in Cinema 500% better with one of those under your left hand... I have the older Space Explorer variant with the 16 buttons, which I have mapped to: undo / redo esc, shift, ctrl, alt Component Mode Last tool SDS on / off (via Q) Move, scale, rotate tools CBR
  23. Did you try searching for just the words, and then browsing images ? Long shot, but worth a go ? CBR
  24. I kinda do remember that, but not where to find it alas ! CBR

    Sony DEV3

I do remember, but we were not alone - there were 5 or 6 entries total ! But I think we simultaneously but totally independently decided we would both model this particular one, out of all the binoculars in the world we could have chosen ! Everyone else did the old fashioned type as I recall Not all is lost to time - see Vintage Gallery, which still has some challenge winners up there, although not this one as far as I could see...
