Various techniques based on topology and what you're trying to achieve. Start by optimizing to make sure points are welded as best as possible. You can use phong break select to pick big flat areas, delete and fill back in to start with a clean slate rebuilding the geo as you go. You can also select the offending edges, dissolve and rebuild. You need to be careful with that so you don't delete supporting edges. In the example below I also used an inset to preserve the edges before rebuilding. It may or may not be necessary depending on the model itself. I then rebuilt with a Close Polygon Hole and then Poly pen tool. you could also use the bridge tool or polygon pen to build back in the polygons individually. definitely save as you go and make dupes of the meshes. In some cases I've had to completely recreate the mesh because what was imported was trash. It typically happens with CAD.
