  1. Very interesting video recently posted by Adam Savage (from Myth Buster's and an ILM modeler in a previous life) on making a sci-fi panel. While done for real and not in a computer, the principles are applicable to 3D modeling as he discusses the process in 3 steps: Basic Form Panelization to break up that basic form: with a sub-step of then added notches to those panels to break up their pattern. Adding greebles --- and this step is also done in two passes: first the non-descript smaller panels on top of the larger panels and then the real fun part -- kit bashing from pre-existing models. Very fascinating. Dave

  2. Others (including Maxon folk) can chip in if I have this wrong, but I found this very interesting and enjoyable to check out. At 1 hour 17 min into the Maxon Training Team video below, Noseman discusses the old and new dynamics systems in C4D. The new system is an extended position based (or particle based) dynamics system. It's apparently better in several ways, faster to calculate, more accurate, and with likely other benefits I'm yet to get my head around. The video immediately below is a recent tech preview of the same dynamics system. It's a deep dive chat that has a number of great examples of what the new system can do. Some of this, I'm assuming, is coming to C4D. There's a great sense of realism to the whole thing and I'm keen to see what C4D can get up to as more parts of the software start to take advantage of this. With Dave M teasing the recent fire video, a lot of the cool stuff we've been waiting a long time for seems to be coming,

  3. I'm moving my office. Look what I found. Old hardware and software. Memories that are now going away to make room for new things 😉

  4. MOD please move the topic, somehow I've posted in the guideline... Here is one one of my latest work, I know you may not like the style;) Any constructive critic is much appreciated, especially regarding tone mapping/color/mood!

  5. same here! I've uploaded the file. It fails with a single texture or with polygon selections-- no matter... I used this a lot in previous versions. I think a lot of stuff got broken between 24-26 and they're just putting the pieces back together again... ProjectWassets.zip

  6. Not all of that is made from scratch, as said some model are laserscan, then I reuse some furniture I've made for other projects and even for the new stuff I often start from components I already have. The chandelier for example is made out of parts from a chandelier I've done a few years ago, same thing for the curtains, the table lamps, the TV cabinet and other parts.

  8. Thanks! Forgot to post some statistics: -about 40million real polygons plus render instances -over 250 lights(spherical, ies, and mesh light plus a physical sun/sky for the day light views) -large use of Vray Fur coupled with Vray Hair material for the carpet. The area was quite large (about 250 square meters of carpet) but I've managed to limit the RAM consumption by using the dedicated level of detail feature -I've used C4D R26, Vray6, Marvelous Designer, all modeled by me except for some laser scans and a couple accessories -most textures and shaders created from scratch for this project, I've also used a few metal from my bundle -tone mapping and post production done 99.9% inside the frame buffer, just some highlights compression, a LUT, and some cryptomatte mask here and there, some white balance when needed -10 days of work including render time -about 4/5h per image @4K resolution on an old 8core system with 32GB RAM

  9. It really is so hard to give them away! Even though they have no value anymore. It is crazy that using a software for such a long time develops a relationship. Like maybe a special hammer for a blacksmith. The only difference is, that a hammer ist basiacally for eternaty and the software never was yours in the first place.

  10. Very nice! I know these kinds of scenes with so many objects and high poly counts aren't easy to pull off and keep organized. I like the brighter white balance of the daytime shots better - the night shots feel a bit too amber/buttery, but I think it comes down to personal taste.
